Here’s a pop quiz for you. What’s the name of your county clerk?

County clerks play a critical role in keeping government operations on track, but they’re not usually in the spotlight. That is, unless you live in Macomb County. Since taking office this year, Macomb County Clerk Karen Spranger has been caught up in one controversy after another.

On Friday, a judge found Spranger in contempt of court for violating an order that prohibits her from interfering with union activity and keeping people from doing their jobs. The court didn't punish Spranger, but said it could if there's another complaint. A lot of people want Spranger off the job, but removing elected officials isn’t a simple task.

Michigan Radio’s Tracy Samilton has been covering this story. She joined Morning Edition host Doug Tribou to discuss the ongoing dilemma.

Tracy Samilton covers energy and transportation, including the auto industry and the business response to climate change for Michigan Radio. She began her career at Michigan Radio as an intern, where she was promptly “bitten by the radio bug,” and never recovered.
Doug Tribou joined the Michigan Radio staff as the host of Morning Edition in 2016. Doug first moved to Michigan in 2015 when he was awarded a Knight-Wallace journalism fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
