U of M's two-year study will look at charters schools across the state.

The Kalamazoo Public Schools are closed until Monday.

The district is calling off school today and Friday because of widespread illness among students and staff.

A message on the district website says that people are experiencing "flu, flu-like, or gastrointestinal symptoms" and the schools will be cleaned before they re-open next week.

"The district encourages students who are sick to stay home until they are symptom-free for 24 hours and to limit contact with others to the extent possible," the message also notes.

Several smaller districts in West Michigan are also closed today because of illnesses.
