The Michigan State Police says it's investigating an incident involving an undercover officer who ran a stop sign, and whose vehicle was hit by a civilian driver on July 3 in Detroit.

MSP spokesman Lieutenant Michael Shaw says they're still investigating what happened

“If one of our members is in the wrong, we have shown that we're not afraid to send that information to the prosecutor and do criminal charges or administratively look at that as well,” he says.

Shaw says MSP officials are reviewing the accident and investigating whether there were issues with the officer’s conduct.

“We're only human and things like this happen and we always take a look at it and what we can do better in the future on different operations to make sure things like this don't happen again,” he says.

Shaw says both the officer and the other driver sustained injuries but have been released from the hospital and are recovering from their injuries. Shaw says the officer is on medical leave.
