Dr. Joneigh Khaldun at a press conference, Tuesday, July 28, 2020.

Michigan's top doctor says she's "very concerned about the upcoming school year." That's after several districts announced last week they would not be requiring masks.

Dr. Joneigh Khaldun is Chief Medical Executive for the state health department. She says those districts aren't following state guidance intended to prevent COVID-19 outbreaks in the classroom.

"And I really, really am concerned that some superintendents may not think that those things are important," she said. "Which is not the case. And that's why we've been very clear in our guidance as far as what they should be doing."

But Khaldun also said there are no plans for the state to implement another broad mask mandate. She was a guest on Stateside. You can listen to her full conversation in the audio file above.
