Recall effort for Paul Scott approved

A double dose of bad news for Republican state Representative Paul Scott this weekend. Secretary of State Ruth Johnson has formally approved a question to recall him for the November ballot. She says a teacher union-backed effort turned in enough valid petition signatures of registered voters to qualify for the ballot.

Also, the Michigan Supreme Court has refused to hear his appeal of a lower court decision that the recall petitions clearly stated a reason to recall the second-term lawmaker from Genesee County. The recall petition says the reasons behind the effort are votes to cut funding to K-through-12 schools and to extend the state income tax to pensions.

Scott will be allowed to submit a 200-word defense that will appear on election ballots in his district. Regular state House elections will not take place until next year.
