Michigan National Guard unit is heading to Afghanistan

The National Guard

About one hundred soldiers from the Michigan National Guard are going to Afghanistan.

The 1460th Transportation Unit leaves on Saturday for Fort Hood, Texas. They will leave for Afghanistan when they finish their training.

Major William Humes is with the National Guard. He says the soldiers will be working with ongoing projects in the region.

"They move everything from fuel, to food to water," he said. "But nobody can predict the future. Once they get actually into Afghanistan they could do a range of security operations."

Humes says this unit is part of the cutback of troops in Afghanistan.

"It's a scaled draw down, so this unit is operating within the overall guidelines of the draw down," he said.

There will be a send-off celebration for the soldiers in Midland on Saturday.
