Romney McDaniel is the new Michigan Republican chairwoman. The niece of Mitt Romney was elected today at a GOP convention in Lansing.

McDaniel says one of her goals is to unite her party’s factions.

“We might not agree on everything, but we can agree that seven years of liberal Obama policies have a destructive effect on our nation, and we need to get a Republican in the White House through Michigan in 2016,” Romney told the crowd.

She says her other goal is to break the Michigan Democrats’ six-cycle winning streak in presidential elections.

“My intention is to have Michigan in play presidentially in 2016,” she said. “We have a base that’s energized, and they want to see us go red. That’s a hard task and it’s going to take a lot of work.”

The last time a Republican presidential candidate won Michigan was 1988.
