A small business owner and former ER nurse is hoping to unseat State Representative Cindy Gamrat.

Gamrat is at the center of a sex and cover-up scandal in Lansing.

Republican Mary Whiteford says she’s ready to run for Gamrat’s seat, whether she resigns or not. Gamrat has not resigned, but she’s not taken the option off the table either.

“I’ve been mortified to find that the 90,000 people of Allegan County have had no representation. None at all,” Whiteford said.

Whiteford says she’s praying for Gamrat and her family. But she says people deserve to have good representation at the state Capitol.

“I’m here whenever it’s time for Cindy Gamrat to either step down, leave or lose an election, I’m going to stay here and I’m going to work hard to be a good credible conservative voice for the constituents in Allegan County,” she said.

Gamrat beat Whiteford in the four-way GOP primary for the seat last summer. Gamrat got 41% of the vote, Whiteford had 29%.
