Lessenberry on the state budget, part-time legislatures, and the 2017 Mackinac Policy Conference

The Mackinac Policy Conference is held at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island

For the first time since he's been governor, the leaders from the state House and Senate have signed a target budget agreement without Rick Snyder's input. House Speaker Tom Leonard and Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof want to close the pension system for new Michigan teachers and only offer a 401k. Governor Snyder's not a fan of that idea.

Morning Edition host Doug Tribou and senior news analyst Jack Lessenberry discuss the ramifications of this budget dispute. They also talk about a ballot proposal being pitched by Lt. Governor Brian Calley that would make the legislature part-time, the possibility of Calley's run for governor, and the focus of this year's Mackinac Policy Conference.
