Students around the country are advocating for gun reform, including banning weapons like the AR 15 used in the school shooting in Parkman, Florida

Since the massacre at a school in Parkman, Florida, Michigan schools have been responding to threats in their communities. Students in Kalamazoo drafted a petition about gun legislation that quickly got tens of thousands of signatures.

Michigan Radio's senior news analyst Jack Lessenberry joined "Morning Edition" host Doug Tribou to discuss gun control and school safety.

They also talk about Jackson County sheriff Steven Rand. He's accused of making offensive comments about blacks, Hispanics, and women, and mocking an officer with partial hearing loss.

Doug Tribou joined the Michigan Radio staff as the host of Morning Edition in June 2016. Doug first moved to Michigan in 2015 when he was awarded a Knight-Wallace journalism fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
