341 citations, 34 arrests during CMU's "Welcome Weekend"

Aug 29, 2016

Police at Central Michigan University say they're cracking down during the school's "Welcome Weekend ."

The Mount Pleasant police issued 341 citations this past weekend, most of them alcohol-related.

They also arrested 34 people over the weekend. That's up significantly from last year.

Officer Jeff Browne says they've done a lot of student outreach and education efforts. Now, he says, they're stepping up enforcement.

"We had a young lady that was struck by a motor vehicle, and the driver of that vehicle was intoxicated, so those are the kind of things that, as a community, we're not OK with," says Browne. "And those are the things that we're working toward, to get away from."

Browne says they worked with 14 different law enforcement agencies over the last few days, including campus and state police.

CMU does mandatory alcohol and sexual assault training for all incoming students, as do several schools in Michigan.
