It's looking like UAW will ratify contract with GM, end strike

Oct 25, 2019

The United Auto Workers strike against General Motors may be nearing an end. Early voting shows the tentative contract is headed toward ratification.

The strike is the longest against GM since 1970.

A majority of workers at many of the big assembly plants have voted to approve the deal, which provides an $11,000 signing bonus, no increase in out of pocket costs for health insurance, and a modest hourly wage increase among other benefits.

The contract does not eliminate lower wages, however, for workers at GM's service and components facilities, and many of those workers have been voting no.  Voting continues Friday, with a deadline of 4 p.m.

If the contract is ratified, GM could call some workers back as early as Saturday.
