Republicans on the Wayne County vote-canvassing board say they want to take back their votes to certify the November 3 election results.

GOP canvassers said in notarized affidavits they felt pressured to certify following a rancorous public comment period.

One of the Republican canvassers told The Detroit Free Press she got a phone call from President Donald Trump after the meeting.

But Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said the deadline has passed for county boards to act. She said there’s no reason to doubt the results.

“We have lots of protocols and checks and balances in place to ensure that once votes are validly cast, they are secured, they are counted, and the results are accurate even in spite of efforts partisan or otherwise to undermine that after the vote has been taken,” said Benson.

She said that also means the statewide results are on track to be certified next week.

“The facts and evidence and truth all suggest that this election – really validates that this election was very secure, a significantly high turnout, and an extraordinary success,” Benson said.

The next step is for the Michigan Board of State Canvassers to meet Monday to certify the statewide results.

Also, multiple news outlets report that the Legislature’s top Republicans – House Speaker Lee Chatfield and Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey – have been invited to visit the White House Friday.
