Instead of escaping the cold and snow, these Michiganders are heading to Pyeongchang

With the weather our state is facing this weekend, it’s unsurprising that Michigan is well-represented at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. 

13 competitors from Michigan are in South Korea for the Winter Games, which formally begin Friday night. The Michigan delegation includes hockey players, ice dancers, speed skaters, and more.
 
Below you will find a list of the Michigan athletes, plus information on when you can watch their events. (Note: all of the times listed are Eastern Standard Time).

Evan Bates, ice dancing

Hometown: Ann Arbor Education: Huron High School, University of Michigan Age: 28

Madison Chock, ice dancing

Hometown: Novi Education: Novi High School, Schoolcraft College graduate Age: 25

Evan Bates and Madison Chock have been partnered since 2011, and have since won two World medals, two Grand Prix Final medals, and four Four Continents medals. They were also the 2015 National Champions. They represented the U.S. at the 2014 Sochi games, and Bates also competed in 2010.

Nick Baumgartner, snowboarding

Hometown: Iron River Education: West Iron County High School Age: 36

Nick Baumgartner is a UP-native and competes in snowboard cross (SBX). He is a two-time X Games medalist, a two-time world champion, and competed in the 2010 and 2014 Olympics.

Hometown: Marysville Education: Ferris State University Age: 28

Chad Billins is a defenseman that started his professional career with the Grand Rapids Griffins before making his NHL debut with Calgary Flames in 2013. He most recently has played as a free agent with various European clubs. This is his first Olympic Games.

After competing with her older brother Keith for 10 years, Madison Hubbell was partnered with Zachary Donohue. Hubbell/Donohue are the current World Champions. The pair are also four-time U.S. bronze medalists.

Megan Keller, hockey

Hometown: Farmington Hills Education: North Farmington High School Age: 21

Megan Keller is a defense player in her first Olympics. She competed on the U.S. team in 2015 and 2016 IIHF Women’s Hockey Championships. Currently a member of the Boston College women’s hockey team, Keller led all defensive players in points in the nation in the 2015-16 season.

Hometown: West Bloomfield Education: Brother Rice High School, Chicago Age: 20

Kyle Mack has been snowboarding since he was 3 years old, and now competes in Slopestyle and Big Air. He placed first in at the U.S. Open in Slopestyle in 2016. Mack has been a member of the U.S. Snowboarding Team since 2011, although this will be his first Olympic games.

Ryan Pivirotto, speed skating

Hometown: Ann Arbor Education: East Lyme High School, Colorado Age: 22

Ryan Pivirotto is a short-track speed skater. He placed fifth in the 2018 Olympic qualifiers and has competed in four World Cup races.

Jim Slater, hockey

Hometown: Lapeer Education: Michigan State University Age: 35

Center Jim Slater played for MSU before playing nine seasons with the Atlanta Thrashers (Winnipeg Jets). He recently began a career in the European NLA. He also played on the U.S. Team in the 2006 and 2012 World Championships.

Jessica Smith-Kooreman, speed skating

Jessica Smith-Kooreman began her career as an inline speed skater and won 16 senior World Championships gold medals by the time she was 24. But in 2007 she switched to ice speed skating. Smith-Kooreman has won twelve World Cup Medals, competed in the 2010 Olympic games, and has held the U.S. National Record in the 500 meters since 2014.

Maia and Alex Shibutani, ice dancing

Hometown: Ann Arbor Education: Huron High School, University of Michigan Ages: 23, 26

Maia and Alex Shibutani (also known as the “Shib Sibs”) are three-time World medalists and two-time U.S. national champions. They competed in the 2014 games, finishing in 9th place.

Hometown: Canton Education: Canton High School Age: 33

Defenseman James Wisniewski has played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Anaheim Ducks, New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Carolina Hurricanes. He currently plays for the Kassel Huskies in the German DEL2 league. This is his first Olympic games.
