Genesee County prosecutors are charging three Oakland County attorneys with racketeering stemming from an alleged debt collection scheme.

The Fishman Group law firm in Bloomfield Hills specializes in debt collection.

On Tuesday, authorities arrested 70-year-old Marc Fishman. He is the president and CEO of the Fishman Group. Also arrested was his son, 32-year-old Ryan Fishman and 33-year-old Alexandra Ichim, a third attorney in the law firm.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton says his office will no longer accept warrant requests tied to charging someone for walking in a city street.

He says in the past, police officers have used the ordinance to uncover potential crimes, like illegal drug possession or outstanding warrants.

Leyton says enforcement of something as minor as walking in the street is potentially selective and subjective.

“I suspect that far more African Americans are being burdened by being stopped in the street for walking as opposed to Caucasians. To me that’s unconstitutional,” says Leyton.

A Flint city councilman today pleaded ‘no contest’ to a charge of “willful neglect of duty” related to his pawning his city-owned laptop.

Police say councilman Eric Mays pawned the laptop nine times over a two-year period. He redeemed it each time.

Mays could face up to a year in jail and fines when he is sentenced on the misdemeanor charge in November.

Genesee County prosecutors are reviewing the case against a Flint city councilman who allegedly pawned his city issued laptop.

Councilman Eric Mays admits he pawned the laptop for $100. He later reclaimed it. He told a Flint-based web news outlet that he didn’t consider pawning the laptop was “criminal.”

“I think it just shows I’m poor,” Mays told Flint Beat.

Prosecutors say they will announce another round of criminal charges in the Flint water crisis tomorrow.

The announcement does not indicate if there are new charges against the current defendants or if charges are being filed against new defendants.

Nine current and former government employees have been charged so far in the aftermath of the Flint water crisis.

Flint’s former utilities director and a retired state health department epidemiologist have cut deals with prosecutors.

The other seven defendants face court hearings next year.

Michigan students have a new way to report potential threats in state schools.

Starting this fall, students who believe they have information about potential criminal activities at schools can use the OK-2-Say hotline to call, text or email tips to law enforcement.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton joined other officials at a Flint area school today to promote the statewide program.
