Eastern Michigan University will extend its contract with professors for two more years. The extension was approved by the university's Board of Regents meeting Tuesday.

The professors’ union, the American Association of University Professors, conducted the negotiations. The agreement covers about 650 tenured and tenure-track faculty.

Geoff Larcom is EMU’s spokesman. He says a level of empathy from both sides helped negotiations.

A federal appeals court says Eastern Michigan University does not have to reinstate its softball program. The Sixth Circuit, U.S. Court of Appeals issued the emergency stay on Thursday.

In the fall, a district court judge found EMU in violation of Title IX. That's after EMU cut women's and men's sports. School officials say they needed to make the cuts to balance the budget. The eliminations were said to part of an effort to reduce the athletic budget by $2.4 million.

In his February 12th ruling, Steeh ordered EMU to allocate funds for recruitment, scholarships, and support staff equivalent to what it had budgeted for the two teams before they were eliminated.

In 2016, 29-year old Eddie Curlin had been charged with receiving and concealing stolen property when he devised a plan to wiggle out of his trouble with the law.

He thought authorities would drop the charges if he spray painted racist messages on Eastern Michigan University buildings, and then pretended to be an informant who could help police find the vandal.

The racist messages caused distress and anger among students, and the plan went awry. After police figured out he was the culprit, they also discovered unrelated identity theft crimes he'd committed.
