The Mid-American Conference has become the first Division 1 league for college football to cancel its fall season because of COVID-19 concerns.

The conference includes Eastern, Western and Central Michigan Universities, as well as the University of Toledo.

It announced Saturday morning that all MAC schools will be postponing their fall sports programs hopefully until the spring.

Eastern Michigan University and two former student athletes have reached a settlement in a Title IX lawsuit filed in June 2018.

The suit alleges sex discrimination in sports program opportunities at EMU. It arose after EMU eliminated its women's varsity softball and tennis teams in March 2018 to address budgetary concerns.  Two men's teams were also eliminated at that time.

A federal appeals court says Eastern Michigan University does not have to reinstate its softball program. The Sixth Circuit, U.S. Court of Appeals issued the emergency stay on Thursday.

In the fall, a district court judge found EMU in violation of Title IX. That's after EMU cut women's and men's sports. School officials say they needed to make the cuts to balance the budget. The eliminations were said to part of an effort to reduce the athletic budget by $2.4 million.

U.S. District Judge George Steeh has ordered Eastern Michigan University to reinstate its women's varsity softball and tennis teams by fall of 2019.

In his February 12th ruling, Steeh ordered EMU to allocate funds for recruitment, scholarships, and support staff equivalent to what it had budgeted for the two teams before they were eliminated.

A federal district judge has issued a preliminary injunction against Eastern Michigan University's cuts to women's varsity sports.

Judge George Caram Steeh says he issued the injunction because it is likely that two female athletes who sued EMU will prevail in their lawsuit, alleging that EMU violated Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972.
