Fiat Chrysler says political conditions in France caused it to withdraw its offer to merge with French automaker Renault.

The company says its board made the decision at a meeting Wednesday evening. An FCA statement says it has become clear that the political conditions don't currently exist for the deal to proceed successfully.

French automaker Renault's board will meet Tuesday to consider a merger offer from Fiat Chrysler.

It would create the largest automaker in the world based on sales, but that's only if Renault's current partner, Nissan, stays in.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and French automaker Renault are in talks about a possible alliance, as both companies seek to address technological and regulatory challenges in the industry.

A person with knowledge of the matter confirmed the advanced discussions, first reported by the Financial Times. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the negotiations have not been made public.

Fiat Chrysler announced an agreement on Monday to supply thousands of Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans to Waymo, Google’s self-driving subsidiary, to expand its fleet of autonomous vehicles.

Waymo currently has 600 Pacifica minivans in its fleet, some of which are used in its Early Rider Program in Phoenix. FCA delivered 100 Pacifica Hybrid minivans during the second half of 2016 and an additional 500 in 2017. The minivans are plug-in hybrid variants with Waymo’s self-driving software and hardware built-in.

Three union workers at Fiat Chrysler are suing the automaker and the United Auto Workers over a bribery scheme.

They're seeking class-action status to represent all FCA hourly workers.

Federal prosecutors say Fiat Chrysler negotiators bribed UAW negotiators in order to get contract concessions and other benefits. So far, one former FCA official, Alphons Iacobelli, and one former UAW official, Virdell King, have pled guilty in the conspiracy. More indictments are expected.

Fiat Chrysler is being sued for an alleged defect in the emissions systems of some trucks that can result in a 25% drop in fuel economy, according to a lawsuit filed by the firm Hagens Berman.

The lawsuit says Fiat Chrysler sold hundreds of thousands of 2013 to 2017 RAM 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks with faulty emissions systems.

Owners who brought their trucks in for a repair of the systems found that the fix resulted in dramatically lower fuel economy.

The law firm that previously sued Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, and Fiat Chrysler for alleged cheating on diesel emissions says General Motors did the same thing.

Hagens Berman has sued GM on behalf of a potential class of approximately 700,000 owners of Chevy and GMC diesel trucks, claiming the automaker cheated to bypass federal standards for allowable emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx.)

The U.S. EPA says the pollutants are linked to asthma, heart disease, smog and global warming, among other ills.

Members of the United Auto Workers union begin voting on a tentative new contract with Fiat Chrysler on Tuesday.

Union leaders are being less passive after the rank and file rejected the first tentative deal in September.

For the second tentative contract, the union hired an outside public relations firm and engaged with members on Facebook and Twitter to explain the terms.

Voting on this contract will take place over two days, instead of two weeks, giving critics a lot less time to criticize and drum up resistance.

What happens next with UAW contract?

Oct 1, 2015

Well, as you may know by now, the United Auto Workers union did an absolutely superb job negotiating a new contact with FCA, Fiat Chrysler.

Everybody in the industry was impressed by the result, with one exception, the workers themselves, who voted the contract down by more than a two to one margin.
