More than a thousand people are expected to attend a conference about hemp this weekend in Lansing.

Last year, more than 500 farmers took part in Michigan’s first legal hemp crop in decades. The results were mixed.

2019 has been a challenging year for Michigan farmers, and weather has only been part of the problem.

Tariff disputes and unsettled trade deals have disrupted international markets for Michigan’s agri-business. The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on the new trade agreement between the U.S., Canada and Mexico in January. Also, China is proposing cutting tariffs in preparation for a partial deal in its trade dispute with the U.S.

Fall in Michigan means harvest time for farmers, and many Michiganders are already flocking to apple orchards and pumpkin patches to reap the benefits of that harvest. A very different group of farmers are celebrating their first harvest as well.
