The University of Michigan is paying more than nine million dollars to settle complaints of sexual harassment and misconduct by a former top official with the university.

Eight women, former or current university staff and students, accused former Provost Martin Philbert of sexual harassment and misconduct.

Several University of Michigan top officials, including former President Mary Sue Coleman, were alerted to sexual misconduct allegations against former Provost Martin Philbert, but ultimately failed to prevent him from sexually harassing and intimidating subordinates and student-employees for more than a decade.

That’s the damning conclusion of a report released Friday by WilmerHale, the firm hired by the U of M in January to conduct an investigation into complaints against Philbert.

Emily Renda’s ex-boyfriend was stalking her. It was 2012, and as a 28-year-old with a master’s degree in public health, she’d recently started a job she loved: working as a global health and student life coordinator at her alma mater, the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan.

The University of Michigan has removed a faculty member from his job as chief academic officer over sexual misconduct allegations that have been made against him.

Martin Philbert has been on paid leave since January when several allegations were made. He lost his job as provost on Wednesday but will remain on the payroll as a faculty member with tenure protection while the investigation continues.

The University of Michigan announced Wednesday that Martin Philbert has been recommended to fill the role of provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, pending confirmation by the Board of Regents on June 15.

Philbert started as a research assistant at the university in 1995, and is currently the dean of the School of Public Health at Michigan, a position he has held since 2011.
