Michigan lawmakers are discussing ways to make school buses safer.

The House Judiciary Committee reviewed a package of bills during a hearing Tuesday.

State Rep. Jack O’Malley (R-Lake Ann) backs a bill that would make it a misdemeanor for an unauthorized person to board a school bus.

The State of Michigan is using some of the settlement money from Volkswagen’s Clean Air Act violations to subsidize new school buses. Volkswagen installed a device to fool emissions tests to show its cars polluted less than they did.

The state received a total of nearly $65 million and more than 20% (almost $9 million) is going to replace old diesel school buses.

Michigan drivers who fail to stop for a school bus displaying its stop sign could face harsher penalties under new bills in the state Legislature.

Senate Bill 472 and House Bill 4867 were recently introduced by Senator Curtis Hertel, Jr. (D-East Lansing) and Representative Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores).

Senator Hertel says currently, drivers who ignore school bus signals are fined $100 for their first offense.

One of the key proposals in Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan’s State of the City address last month was a new busing system that would serve both district and charter schools.

The announcement brought to mind Detroit's fraught history with school busing. The city's schools –  along with nearly every urban school system in the country – are still living with the legacy of the 1974 Supreme Court decision on busing in the case of Milliken v. Bradley.

Michigan parents with smartphones can help keep track of school buses that didn't pass the state's annual safety inspection.

Inspection results for individual buses can be accessed by scanning a QR code sticker found on the bus's door.

The state says 85% of school buses passed this year’s safety inspection. The 15% that didn’t pass received either a “yellow” or “red” status.

Washtenaw Intermediate School District is trying to hire more bus drivers and monitors. That's to avoid a repeat of Monday morning's cancellation of school bus service for Ann Arbor Public Schools. The buses resumed running Monday afternoon.

WISD has also "offered staff compensation incentives to attend work and to stay through the duration of our contracts," said Emma Jackson, WISD's spokesperson.
