An accident scene on I-94

The Michigan State Police is issuing 58 speeding tickets to people involved in a series of massive pileups on I-94 near Battle Creek in January.

The 193-car pileup happened on both sides of I-94 near Battle Creek during a snowstorm on January 9.

Lt. Dale Hinz says many people were driving too fast for the conditions.
But he says some people did stop in time, which shows the importance of staying alert, not speeding, and not tailgating.

"It wasn't one large accordion out there, there were several gaps of undamaged vehicles," says Hinz. "Our number one goal here [in issuing tickets] is not to exact some kind of penalty. It's to affect driver behavior."

One truck driver was killed and 18 other drivers were injured. The accidents caused the closure of I-94 near Climax for two days.
