Flint’s bus service will make it easier for people to get to the grocery store starting Friday.

Two supermarket chains closed stores in Flint last month. That left thousands of city residents without a nearby store to buy fresh food.

“This devastates the community and we've got to take action,”says Charlene Kowalski with the Mass Transportation Authority.

She says the MTA is adding a special supermarket route. “Ride for Groceries” buses will carry people across town to remaining grocery stores.

The route will operate 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. It includes a Kroger store in Flint and a Wal-Mart store in Burton.

Kowalski says a stop at a local Aldi store will be added on Monday.
