DETROIT (AP) - General Motors Co. says thousands of pieces of office equipment and furniture being discarded because of renovations will be donated to institutions and organizations across Michigan.

The Detroit-based automaker announced Monday it's working with furniture maker Herman Miller and environmental firm Green Standards on a two-year effort to divert materials from landfills. The program called rePurpose manages surplus corporate assets through resale, recycling, and donation.

The equipment, valued at roughly $1 million, comes from GM's headquarters, Technical Center in Warren and Proving Ground in Milford. Some goes to other company locations.

Among the beneficiaries is Detroit's Cody High School. In addition to donating furniture and other supplies, the companies' volunteers are making over three school rooms.

GM says it has kept 550 tons of office materials out of landfills.
