Fewer insurance companies will be offering health care plans in Michigan through the Affordable Care Act marketplace this fall.
Since Obamacare began, Michigan insurance regulators have vetted the companies willing to offer health care plans in the state. This year, they’ll havefewer companies to vet.
The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DFIS) says filing information has been received from Blue Care Network of Michigan, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Health Alliance Plan, McLaren Health Plan, Meridian Health Plan of Michigan, Molina Healthcare of Michigan, PHP, Priority Health and Total Health Care USA.
However, other large insurers, like Aetna and Humana have not applied to offer policies through the ACA marketplace in Michigan next year.
“This number of insurance companies is lower than last year,” says Andrea Miller, DIFS spokeswoman, “However, I know the director is pleased with the number of companies that have shown interest in participating again this year.”
DIFS will release the proposed "2018 Michigan Health Insurance Rate Change Requests" for both individual and small group policies by Aug. 1 as part of the review process.
Open enrollment for Michigan's federally-operated health insurance marketplace will begin Nov. 1. Coverage would be effective Jan. 1, 2018.
