Barring a last minute hiccup, recreational marijuanashould be legal in Michigan next month.

If the Board of State Canvassers approves Michigan’s election results when it meets Monday, recreational marijuana will be legalstarting December 6th.

Police departments around the state are trying to be ready.

Robert Stevenson is the executive director of the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police.

He expects law enforcement will be dealing with increasing numbers of people driving under the influenceand illegal black market sales.

“We’ve been in touch with Colorado to share experiences and techniques,” says Stevenson, “If I had a secret technique to catch all the people, I wouldn’t tell you for obvious reasons, because we would want to use it to catch people that are selling.”

Individuals will be able to grow their own marijuana starting next month, but commercial recreational sales in Michigan are likely a year away.
