The University of Michigan now owns two driverless shuttles manufactured by the French autonomous vehicle start-up Navya. The Navya Armas are fully autonomous and electric.

This fall, two completely driverless shuttles will start running on the University of Michigan’s campus.

Researchers will be focusing on safety. But it’s also a chance to see how people interact with driverless vehicles.

“Safety if our first priority here,” said Carrie Morton, assistant director of MCity. “The shuttles operate in a very conservative manner, so if they even think they detect a person or a pedestrian they’re going to stop."

Michigan Radio’s Tyler Scott got to ride one of the shuttles at MCity – Michigan’s testing ground for driverless and connected cars.

He has this audio postcard. Click on the link above to listen.
