Republican leaders say Governor Gretchen Whitmer will have to wait for new money for roads. They say she can expect budget bills to start heading her way next week – and the bargaining for new road money can start later.

Tiffany Brown is the governor’s press secretary. She says Republicans have had all year to work on the budget. She says the plans proposed so far by GOP leaders are non-starters.

“The games being played by Republicans are leading us toward a shutdown, which Governor Whitmer has been working hard to avoid," Brown said. "And these games do nothing to address our education crisis or fix the damn roads."

The state’s new fiscal year starts October first. The Legislature resumes its session next week.

State House and Senate leaders say the governor can expect to see budget bills headed her way next week – and then it’s up to her to sign or veto them.
